Fear Free Visits for Dogs

Veterinary visits can feel unfamiliar or overwhelming for some dogs. New environments, handling, and previous experiences can all influence how a dog responds during an appointment.

Fear Free Visits are designed to reduce stress and help dogs feel more comfortable when attending the clinic. These visits focus on creating positive experiences, building trust, and supporting dogs at a pace that feels appropriate for them. This approach is also used to help dogs who feel unsure about grooming, allowing us to prepare them in a way that supports comfort and long-term success.

Our approach may include adjusting how and when appointments are carried out, allowing time for your dog to settle, and using gentle handling techniques to support a more relaxed experience.

For some dogs, a structured approach to planning and preparation can make a meaningful difference.

At Melbourne Dog Clinic, our team is trained to support dogs using Fear Free principles, focusing on gentle handling, patience, and adapting care to each individual dog.

We recognise that every dog is different, and we adjust our approach to suit their comfort level, behaviour, and previous experiences.

Creating a Low-Stress Environment

The clinic environment plays an important role in how dogs feel during their visit.

We have designed our spaces to support a calm, low-stress experience, helping dogs feel more comfortable from the moment they arrive.

You can learn more on our Fear Free Environment page.

Fear Free Environment

Why Reducing Stress Matters

Dogs experience their environment differently to humans, and veterinary visits can involve unfamiliar sights, sounds, and handling.

When a dog feels stressed, it can affect how they respond to examination, treatment, and future visits.

Reducing stress helps dogs feel more comfortable and allows care to be carried out more gently and effectively. A more relaxed dog also allows for a more accurate assessment of their health and wellbeing.

Creating positive experiences over time can help dogs feel more confident and at ease when returning to the clinic.

Grooming and Fear Free Preparation

Some dogs find grooming unfamiliar, overwhelming, or uncomfortable, particularly if they are sensitive to handling or have had a difficult experience in the past.

At Melbourne Dog Clinic, grooming is approached in the same way as our veterinary care, using Fear Free principles to support each dog’s comfort and emotional wellbeing.

For some dogs, the best first step is not grooming itself, but preparation.

A Fear Free consultation allows us to understand your dog’s individual needs and create a plan to help them feel more comfortable with the grooming process.

This may include:

  • Identifying sensitive areas or handling concerns

  • Assessing for any underlying pain or discomfort

  • Recommending gradual introduction sessions (such as Victory Visits or shorter grooming sessions)

  • Discussing supports such as pre-visit calming pharmaceuticals (PVPs), if appropriate

This approach helps reduce stress and supports a more positive grooming experience over time.

Fear Free Initial Consultation

A Fear Free Initial Consultation is an owner-only appointment designed to help us understand your dog before they attend the clinic.

For some dogs, visiting the clinic can feel overwhelming. Taking the time to gather information in advance allows us to plan a more supportive and tailored approach for your dog’s future visits.

During this consultation, we focus on understanding your dog as an individual. This may include:

• your dog’s medical and behavioural history
• previous experiences with vet visits or grooming
• specific triggers, sensitivities, or challenges
• how your dog responds to handling or new environments
• any concerns or priorities you would like addressed

This approach can also support dogs who find grooming, handling, or veterinary visits challenging.

This discussion helps us identify what support may be beneficial and how best to structure your dog’s care moving forward.

By planning ahead, we can help reduce stress and create a more positive experience when your dog attends the clinic.

Fear Free Victory Visits

Fear Free Victory Visits are structured appointments designed to help your dog build confidence and positive associations with the clinic environment.

These visits are typically recommended following a Fear Free Initial Consultation, once we have a better understanding of your dog’s individual needs and how best to support them.

Victory Visits are approximately 40 minutes in duration, allowing time to work at your dog’s pace without feeling rushed.

These visits focus on creating calm, positive experiences and may include:

• gentle introductions to the clinic environment
• positive interactions with the veterinary team
• gradual exposure to handling or equipment
• reinforcing calm behaviour with rewards

Each visit is tailored to your dog, with the goal of helping them feel more relaxed and confident over time.

For some dogs, a small number of visits may be sufficient, while others may benefit from a more gradual approach.

Happy Visits

Happy Visits are short, positive visits designed to help dogs build and maintain a comfortable relationship with the clinic.

These visits are typically brief and low-pressure, allowing your dog to experience the clinic environment without the need for examination or procedures.

Happy Visits may include:

• coming into the clinic for a calm, positive experience
• gentle interactions with the team
• receiving treats or rewards
• leaving before your dog becomes overwhelmed

For some dogs, Happy Visits may be introduced after a series of Fear Free Victory Visits. For others, they can be used as an ongoing way to reinforce positive associations with the clinic.

These visits are particularly helpful for:

• puppies learning that the clinic is a safe place
• dogs who have previously felt unsure or anxious
• maintaining progress after more structured Fear Free support

You can learn more about building positive early experiences on our All About Puppies pages.

Who May Benefit from Fear Free Visits

Fear Free Visits may be helpful for dogs who feel unsure, sensitive, or overwhelmed in certain situations.

This may include dogs who:

• become anxious or stressed during veterinary visits or grooming
• have had previous negative experiences in clinical environments
• are sensitive to handling or touch
• show changes in behaviour, such as avoidance, freezing, or reactivity
• are highly excitable or find it difficult to settle
• are puppies or young dogs who would benefit from positive early experiences
• are older dogs who may be less tolerant due to discomfort or change

These visits are designed to support dogs at all stages of life, with a focus on building confidence and creating more positive experiences over time.

You can learn more about recognising and supporting these behaviours on our Nervous or Anxious Dogs page.

Some dogs may also benefit from this approach during grooming.

Our grooming team works closely with our veterinary team to apply the same Fear Free principles, helping create a calm and supportive experience for dogs who may find grooming unfamiliar or overwhelming.

What to Do Next

If your dog feels unsure, sensitive, or overwhelmed in certain situations, taking a gradual and supportive approach can make a meaningful difference.

A Fear Free Initial Consultation is often the best first step, allowing us to understand your dog’s needs and plan how to support them before they attend the clinic.

From there, we can guide you on whether Fear Free Victory Visits, Happy Visits, or other supports may be appropriate.

Every dog is different, and our goal is to help your dog feel more comfortable and confident over time.

You can learn more about our approach on our Consultations page or contact our team to discuss your dog’s needs.
