Recovery After TPLO Surgery
TPLO surgery is a commonly performed procedure used to stabilise the knee after a cruciate ligament rupture.
Following surgery, the bone requires time to heal while the body adapts to the new mechanics of the knee joint.
During the first few weeks after surgery, activity must be restricted to allow the bone and surrounding tissues to begin healing. Dogs are typically limited to:
• short, controlled lead walks
• quiet rest at home
• avoiding running, jumping, or stairs where possible
Pain relief and anti-inflammatory medications help keep dogs comfortable during recovery.
As healing progresses, exercise can gradually increase. Controlled walking helps rebuild muscle strength and supports joint function.
Follow-up examinations and X-rays may be recommended to monitor bone healing. Most dogs show significant improvement over the first few months following surgery.
With appropriate recovery and rehabilitation, many dogs return to comfortable activity and an active lifestyle after TPLO surgery.
